Equity research

My experiences as a NH scientist motivate me to apply my analytical training to addressing inequities in STEM. As a PhD student at UC Berkeley, I co-led a study (Chen et al. 2020) uncovering widespread racial disparities at the National Science Foundation.1 We found that award losses for Asian and Black scientists exceeded $3 billion over two decades in a key US funding agency. Our publication reignited discussion of the disadvantages minoritized scientists face in STEM, spurred reform within federal agencies, and was highlighted in federal law.
